Pfukani Theatre Group (PTG)

Description

Creation of innovative means of income generation to unemployed rural youth groups through theatre and increasing environmental and social development awareness using theatre as a means of communication.

Objectives

  • During ResourceAfrica’s COP initiative, actors from Welverdiend Village in Bushbuckridge were identified and theatrically trained and were subsequently involved in a number of plays performed nationally, regionally and internationally. Since the COP regional programme in southern Africa came to an end in 2001, it was decided that the COP activities carried out by the Welverdiend Actors Group in Bushbuckridge, South Africa, should be incorporated into the Bushbuckridge Nature Conservation Project (BNCP) framework. BNCP is a project currently being implemented by ResourceAfrica, funded by the W. k. Kellogg Foundation. The Welverdiend Theatre Group is now the focus of the BNCP COP activities.
  • The purpose of the BNCP COP is to strengthen the capacity of the Welverdiend Theatre Group and establish regional theatre groups in the Limpopo Province for education and income generation.

Activities

  • Develop a marketing strategy for the Welverdiend Theatre Group
  • Establish contacts with private lodges in the area
  • Performances at least twice per month by the Welverdiend Theatre Group
  • Develop a feasibility and needs analysis for the theatre groups in the Limpopo Province
  • Facilitate the development of a Provincial Theatre Group
  • Conduct theatre tours to other provinces in South Africa

Outcome

  • Improved theatrical, business and marketing skills of the PTG and other targeted youth
  • Functioning of the PTG as an independent legal entity
  • Play performances conducted regionally and provincially for greater awareness of environmental and social development issues and income generation.
  • Paid Performances
  • Environmental Awareness
  • Strategic partnerships engaged with other potential theatre groups formed

Location

Welverdiend Village in Bushbuckridge

Duration

April 2002 - present

Future steps

  • Continue to identify opportunities where theatre can be used as a medium of communication
  • Expose and market PTG to international platforms or conservation related conferences
  • Develop additional plays and diversify into other topics such as HIV/AIDS, women’s abuse and other social topics as may be required by clients

Lessons learnt

  • Success stories are made by passionate and dedicated individuals
  • Financial and business motivated development approaches within a small group may yield positive results. The PTG is one example of such.
